Edmonton was blanketed with a burst of wet snow Tuesday morning, leading to visibility issues and numerous collisions around the city.
Police said between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., there were a total of 279 collisions. That included 37 hit-and-run collisions, 22 injury collisions, and 220 collisions that led to property damage.
Edmonton was set to see up to 10 centimetres of snow Tuesday, according Global Edmonton meterologist Jesse Beyer.
The city suspended residential blading Tuesday to focus on the fresh snow. Plows would be centered on Priority 1 and 2 routes, said officials, with hopes to return to residential blading by the end of the week.
Environment Canada issued a weather warning at 10:14 a.m. Tuesday, due to heavy bands of snow and visibility reduction. That warning was lifted in the afternoon.
The weather agency said that visibility was extremely poor during the snowy periods, with some areas less than 500 m.
