TORONTO – The Ontario Labour Relations Board has issued an order for workers from the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) to return to work on June 17, according to a release by The National Elevator Escalator Association.

A section of Ontario’s Labour Relations Act requires any strikes affecting the construction of new residential buildings and repairs to existing buildings to have a cap of six weeks.

Failure to comply would constitute an illegal strike and can result in individual fines of up to $2,000 or a fine to the union  of up to $25,000.

The National Elevator Escalator Association indicated their pleasure with the decision.

However, the release says IUEC leaders have advised workers not to comply with the law.

The union has been on strike since May 1.
