ST. LOUIS, Sask. – Residents in northern Saskatchewan are frustrated over inaction by the province to clear a flooded section of Highway 2.
NDP deputy Leader Trent Wotherspoon toured the area near St. Louis a couple of weeks ago and says despite pleas from communities, businesses and families for help, the province has yet to fix the flooded-out section.
Steven Korecki, a teacher who lives in St. Louis and is a frequent commuter on Highway 2, says his wife and baby are barely managing the lengthy detour for the baby’s frequent medical appointments.
The detour also takes drivers away from St. Louis, where business owner Betty Rancourt says the flooded-out road has cut her garden nursery business by half this spring.
James Brake, who also owns a business in St. Louis, says it’s been six weeks without the road and hundreds of people are affected.
Provincial officials say they pumps have been on site moving the water since the first week of June, but it’s going to take four to six weeks to get all the water off the highway.
