A plan for a 54-suite apartment complex for homeless people and recovering drug addicts has been put on hold.
The $10.4 million project, funded by Homeward Trust and the Alberta Government, went before the city’s development appeal board. The board had a problem with Hope Mission’s proposed parking plan.
For a five-storey building like one under consideration, 60 parking stalls are required. However, planners argued that most residents won’t have cars, and proposed having 34 stalls. The appeal board wasn’t convinced, concerned about what would happen if the building was sold, or it’s use was changed in the future.
The Hope Mission now has to come up with a away to increase the number of parking stalls, reduce the number of units, or decide to scrap the project altogether.
The group had hoped to begin construction this fall.
