1,500 students from south Edmonton schools gathered on Thursday to form a chain over 2 kms long. The aim? A special delivery to the St. Theresa Parish food bank.

Students at St. Elizabeth and Frere Antoine elementary schools along with students from St. Hilda junior high and Holy Trinity high school came up with the "Hands of Hope" chain gang about a month ago, and they’ve been collecting food ever since.

"We get to help people live and survive through the world" Chantel Dionne said about the project.

Students from all of the participating schools are familliar with the slogan ‘Think locally, act globally’ because it’s the slogan for Edmonton Catholic Schools, and school officials say this donation is a perfect example.

"We wanted it to be symbolic that the helping hand joined together would do something in our neighbourhood, for our community." Nicole LaFreniere, assistant principal of St. Hilda said Thursday.

Students aged five through 18 participated in the project.
