REGINA – Some local filmmakers, who found out Monday they are in the top running in a contest to win $1 million to film an original movie, are now looking at what needs to be done to prepare a final pitch.

“I had about five seconds of excitement and then the realization that we had less than a week from the time we found out to get ready a whole new pitch, a whole new video, and memorize it,” said Lowell Dean, writer and director of Wolf Cop.

Cinecoup’s Film Accelerator is a national competition for cash and also the opportunity to have the chosen film shown in theatres across Canada. Each week, filmmakers have had to complete challenges to stay in the running. The final challenge is to convince a panel of judges next week at the Banff World Media Festival that their film is worth producing.

Dean said he thinks Wolf Cop has what it takes because it has already garnered a fan base from around the world.

“One thing I didn’t know prior to this contest was how much of an untapped market there was for werewolf fans.  I mean, you hear about werewolves and you think, ‘oh sure, there’s people out there who like it, but I almost feel like maybe this is the time for werewolves. We’ve seen zombies have a huge resurgence; we’ve seen vampires have a huge resurgence,” he said.

Werewolf fans are feeling a little left out, said Dean.  He hopes to be able to change that with good news next week.
