Olympic show-and-tell at Westglen school

Olympic silver medalist Jessica Gregg had a very special reason to visit to the students at Westglen Elementary School on Friday.

In September of 2009 the school adopted the local athlete. Gregg visited the students to help kick off the school year and inspire them to always do their best. Since that time the students have kept in touch with her through emails and letters.

In February, students at the school watched intently as their personal Olympic hero represented our country in speed skating at the Olympic Games in Vancouver. They celebrated as Gregg won a silver medal in the 3,000 metre relay on February 24th with teammates Tania Vicent, Kalyna Roberge and Marianne St-Gelais.

"Every morning we did a medal count" teacher Linda Hut told Global. "When she added her silver to the chart there was a huge explosion of applause."

The victory truely hit home for the students on Friday when Gregg once again paid a visit to the school, this time bringing along her Olympic medal. The kids had a chance to relive the race, ask questions, and congratulate their Olympic hero in person.

"It’s really cool," student Kate Manning told Global News. "Actually having an athlete at our school, it’s really exciting."
