TORONTO – Ontario’s Minister of the Environment Jim Bradley officially kicked off the 2013 Clean Air Commute Tuesday, an annual contest that encourages citizens to find alternative modes of transportation that reduce pollution and gridlock.
The week-long competition encourages workplaces across Canada to have their employees find more environmentally-conscious ways to travel to work.

“Last year, more 15,000 employees from 257 workplaces did their part for cleaner air by taking public transit, riding their bikes, walking or rollerblading to work.” Minister Bradley said.
Bradley also attributed improved air quality, such as a 40 per cent decrease in air pollution on average over the past decade to the Clean Air Commute and similar initiatives.

Now in its 21st year, the event is run by Pollution Probe, a national non-profit organization focusing on environmental issues.
According to statistics released by Pollution Probe, last year’s event saw the environment spared of over 550 tonnes of air pollutants.
The 2013 Clean Air Commute runs from June 17 – June 23.
