Man shot by police in North York following suspected road rage incident: SIU

Ontario’s Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU) says they are investigating after a man was shot by police in North York following a suspected road rage incident early Saturday.

In a statement sent to Global News, the SIU said a preliminary investigation suggests the incident began when a person contacted police around 3:50 a.m. to report an road rage incident and suggested that the driver of the other vehicle may have been armed with a weapon.

Police located a “vehicle of interest” at a Tim Hortons drive-thru in the Jane Street and Falstaff Avenue area and got into an altercation with the driver, according to the statement.

The SIU said a police officer then fired his weapon multiple times and the driver, a 29-year-old man, was struck.

He was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU said eight investigators, including two forensic investigators, have been assigned to review the incident.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
