A 23-year-old is dead after a multiple-vehicle crash about eight kilometres north of Rimbey, Alta., on Tuesday.
RCMP and STARS Air Ambulance said the collision happened at Township Road 432 and Highway 20 after 2:30 p.m.
An SUV heading north in the southbound lane collided with a truck travelling south, RCMP said Wednesday. Police weren’t able to confirm how many vehicles were involved but said they were damaged and wound up in ditches.
RCMP added that the 23-year-old driver of the SUV died at the scene, but weren’t able to confirm their gender.
Five people were sent to hospital, EMS and RCMP said.
A four-year-old boy was taken to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton via STARS in serious but stable condition, EMS said.
Two women were taken to hospital in stable condition: one went to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, the other to Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, according to EMS.
EMS said a child and an adult were also taken to the hospital in Rimbey but did not specify their conditions.
RCMP said Wednesday one adult and two children remained in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and two other adults were assessed and released.
Police said as of Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. that emergency crews were going to be at the scene for “several hours,” and advised drivers to avoid the area. The scene was clear by 8:20 p.m., RCMP said.
The crash’s cause is under investigation.
