Crews were called to a vacant two-story house in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue, just before 6 p.m. last night.

Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the structure, forcing crews to fight over an hour to bring the blaze under control.

No occupants were found inside the home and neighbouring homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

Neighbours on Selkirk Avenue told Global News fires in vacant houses in the area have been a common occurrence this summer.

“One house burnt down, another one burnt down, it seems to be all over. In fact my insurance policy went up $100 because on Sargent Avenue they’re having fires out there too yet.” says Walter Hrabi who lives next door to the house that caught fire.
