Residents allowed to return to Old Strathcona building after fire

Less than an hour after a fire prompted the evacuation of a residential building in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona neighbourhood, a fire official told Global News on Friday evening that residents have been allowed to return to their suites.

A spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services told Global News a fire was reported at a building near 87 Avenue and Gateway Boulevard at 5:15 p.m. They said about 24 firefighters arrived at the scene six minutes later.

The spokesperson said there was a “noticeable fire” on the sixth floor. They added that the fire was declared under control at 5:40 p.m.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., a fire official at the scene told Global News that the fire was contained to a balcony on the sixth floor and that residents have been allowed to re-enter their suites.

No injuries were reported.

Northbound Gateway Boulevard was closed from 86 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive as emergency crews responded to the fire.
