Global News has declared Liberal Brenda Shanahan re-elected in Châteauguay—Lacolle with just 934 votes. The decision desk finally called this riding just before 2 a.m.
This is a fairly new riding created in 2013. It was created from the former ridings of Châteauguay—Saint-Constant and Beauharnois—Salaberry.
Shanahan was first elected in 2015 with 39.1 per cent of the vote. This time she obtained 38.7 per cent of the vote, compared to 36.9 per cent for Bloc Québécois candidate Claudia Valdivia.
Both the ridings that formed Châteauguay—Lacolle, elected Bloc Québécois MP’s from 2004 until the NDP victories in 2011. However, the riding was swept up in the Liberal wave of 2015.
Geography
The riding begins south of Montreal and goes all the way to the Canada-US border. Despite its name, the riding does not include the municipality of Lacolle.
