Parts of northern Alberta under rainfall warning

A rainfall warning was issued for a number of areas in northern Alberta on Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada advised people in affected areas that anywhere between 40 to 100 millimetres of precipitation could fall in those areas before the rain comes to an end on Thursday night.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance,” the weather agency said.

“Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Environment Canada also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for several areas in central and northern Alberta.

Environment Canada said meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms that had the potential to generate “very strong wind gusts, up to ping-pong ball-sized hail and heavy rain” in some areas.

The severe thunderstorm warnings had all been lifted by Wednesday night.

Environment Canada also confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down northeast of the village of Waskatenau at about 1:50 p.m., and that its meteorologists were investigating the incident.

It is not known whether any injuries have been reported or what kind of damage, if any, resulted from the twister.
