SASKATOON – Construction of the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan is underway.
Fencing and trailers have been hauled in and the contractor is prepping to build the largest art gallery in the province.
EllisDon Corporation, the same contractor in charge of the new Saskatoon police headquarters, now has control of the site at River Landing.
The tender went out in September and the lowest bidder tacked on an extra $3.5 million to the cost of the gallery and $6.2 million more for the parkade.
This additional $9.7 million was added to the total cost of the project at a council meeting in March.
The city said construction costs, especially the price of concrete, are more expensive than anticipated.
The project also includes an underground parkade and an addition to Persephone Theatre.
The gallery itself was supposed to cost $74 million but now comes in at just under $94 million.
