SASKATOON – Construction hasn’t even begun on the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan and already it’s coming in over budget.
The gallery was supposed to coast $74 million with the underground parkade expected to ring in around $13 million.
The tender went out in September and now three companies have bid on the work. The lowest bidder is tacking on an extra $3.5 million to the cost of the gallery and $6.2 million more for the parkade.
The city says construction costs, especially the price of concrete, are more expensive than anticipated.
Administration is recommending extending the project’s loan from 15 to 25 years to make up the extra cost.
The topic goes to city council on Monday.
