Calgary woman, 20, dead after falling in Grassi Lakes rock climbing area

A 20-year-old woman from Calgary is dead following an incident in Kananaskis on Saturday afternoon, according to EMS and RCMP.

Witnesses said she was walking on a hiking path through the Grassi Lakes rock climbing area when she was hit by a rock.

RCMP said she fell 35 metres but witnesses say it was more like three metres.​

EMS responded to an area near Spray Lakes Road at around 12:30 p.m. for reports of an injured climber.

Canmore RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a 911 call in the Grassi Lakes area​ after 12:40 p.m.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, EMS said.

Police said she was climbing without safety gear or rope while witnesses said she was hiking.

The cause of her death is under investigation.
