TORONTO – A Toronto woman who uses a wheelchair to navigate her way through the city has encountered significant problems with the city’s new subway trains.
Nancy Barry, who relies on her wheelchair, says the TTC’s new trains leave too much space between the platform and the train.
“The gap between the platform and the train was a problem before but now it’s horrendous,” Barry said. “My front wheel is getting struck and I’m trying to get on the train before the doors close on me.”

Barry was injured recently when her chair snapped back while at a TTC station.
“We know that in some stations and on some trains that vertical gaps that are higher than normal that have proven to be a challenge for people in mobility devices,” TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said. “We continue to tweak them to work out some early teething problems that you have with the new fleet like a subway train that’s complex like that.”
The TTC has also recently made the stations and trains more accessible, Ross added: Seats in the new trains fold up for wheelchairs and elevators have been isntalled throughout the TTC system.
Ross added that the TTC also consults with organizations to make the TTC more accessible.
