A hit-and-run left a 75-year-old pedestrian dead in Burnaby on Thursday.
Burnaby RCMP said it happened near Boundary Road and Marine Way, around 11:20 a.m.
“Witnesses say the driver stopped briefly at the scene and then continued driving eastbound on Marine Way,” said police.
Investigators said the victim was declared dead at the scene.
“From witness accounts, it appears as though the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle,” added police.
Ross Smyth works in a nearby building and said he knew something was wrong when he heard a loud sound.
“It’s a distinctive sound. If you ever hear a tractor trailer hit a dip in the road, these ones that are towing the sea containers, they make a distinctive sound,” he said.
“It was a real bang, that’s when we looked out … then people were running out to try to cover, because they recognized the body.”
Smyth said the people who ran to help were badly shaken up, describing the vicitm’s injuries as catastrophic.
Investigators said they are looking for a semi-truck pulling a dark red-coloured shipping container.
