Mother goose sets up nest at Strathcona County EMS station

EDMONTON- An EMS station in Strathcona County has quickly become somewhat of a tourist attraction.

A mother goose, who firefighters have named Burnice, has recently made a flower planter outside the building her home.

Staff first noticed her about two weeks ago. Since then she’s made a nest in the planter and laid her eggs.

“There’s six eggs. She did leave the nest once, and she’s got them all covered with feathers,” said Pat Lagaden.

Lagaden says some people don’t even notice Burnice when they come into the station, “and then some people come flying in and say ‘Hey! Do you know you have a goose out there?’ So, it’s quite funny actually.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But, while Burnice sits pretty in her planter most of the time, protecting her eggs, it appears the father is nowhere to be found.

“He’s not around. The dad was here for a while, keeping guard. He would sit out in the parking lot and we were worried he’d get run over, and we don’t see him too much lately. So, he’s a deadbeat,” Lagaden said with a laugh.

Staff were worried about Burnice earlier this week when the snow hit. But, they say she’s doing well and has become quite the local attraction.

“Lots of families are coming around and looking at her now,” Lagaden said. “She is part of our family. Everybody is in love with her.”
