Classes to resume at northwest Calgary school following fire

Classes will return to normal on Thursday at a northwest Calgary school that was the site of a fire on Tuesday evening.

According to the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), the fire at Buffalo Rubbing Stone School started in one of the bathrooms near the entrance of the building.

In a statement on its website, Buffalo Rubbing Stone School said no students or staff were in the building at the time.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters and the CBE reported no further damage. The bathroom, however, will remain closed until next week for repairs.

As a result of the fire, classes at the K-4 school were cancelled on Wednesday and students instead went to a nearby school for the day.

“While regular classes are cancelled, we have made arrangements for Buffalo Rubbing Stone students to go to Captain Nicola Goddard School – 405 Panatella Blvd N.W. – for the school day. All students are welcome to attend for the regular school day,” a statement on the website said.

Nearby Panorama Hills School also accommodated students and helped with recess and lunch.

A field trip to Ralph Klein Park that was planned for students was cancelled. Neither the CBE nor the school provided an update on the field trip on Wednesday afternoon.

Noting that the school was safe, the CBE thanked all those involved in ensuring classes went ahead as well as the students of Buffalo Rubbing Stone “for their flexibility and how they handled the disruption to the regular learning day.”
