Accident investigators are releasing more details about Sunday’s deadly crash in Surrey that claimed the lives of five members of one family, including two children. It happened near the intersection of 176th Street and 32nd Avenue.

Three generations of women from the Sachdeva family were killed in an instant — a 31-year-old mother, who was driving, her three-year-old daughter and five-year-old son, who was celebrating his birthday. Their grandmother and aunt were also killed.

The family owns a South Asian sweet shop in Surrey.

The driver of the white mini-van involved — a 46-year-old Langley man — was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

RCMP say it’s too early in the investigation to rule out drugs or alcohol as possible factors in the crash, but given the impact and damage, speed was involved.

There is no red light camera where the crash happened, but other cameras in the area may help investigators put together the circumstances surrounding the collision.

People who often travel the area say it’s a dangerous stretch of road that’s prone to speeders and accidents.

The debris path stretched 100 meters – an indication the vehicle that ran the red light was moving at excessive speed.
