MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Ontario’s police watchdog says no charges will be laid in the shooting of an Ottawa-area woman whose dogs attacked provincial officers last year.
The Special Investigations Unit says there are no grounds to charge an officer who fired her gun at one of the dogs and accidentally struck the woman.
The incident happened on June 12, 2018, when two OPP officers attended a home in Almonte, Ont., southwest of Ottawa.
When officers rang the doorbell, the SIU says two dogs got out of the house and attacked them.
One of the officers shot at one of the dogs, but the bullet struck the resident of the home, a 64-year-old woman, in the leg.
SIU director Tony Loparco says in a statement that there’s no evidence the officer broke the law – and in fact, it may have been negligent for her not to draw her weapon and fire.
