Premier Doug Ford announced Friday in Ottawa that his government will pledge $1.2 billion towards LRT Phase 2, continuing a promise made by the former government.
“Our government is a strong supporter of public transit and making life easier for the people of Ontario,” said Ford. “This project will transform the way people in Ottawa and commuters travel.”
While the budget for Phase 2 has already been approved by council, contracts to begin construction couldn’t be signed until funding from the other levels of government was officially approved.

The federal government cemented their pledge in the most recent budget tabled last week. Mayor Jim Watson says the project was contingent on the funding that will be provided by the province.
“We’re very grateful of the funding that’s been announced today,” said Watson. “Its the final piece of the puzzle.”
Concerns were raised earlier Friday when a report came out saying that SNC Lavalin, one of the proponents of Phase 2, failed to meet the minimum technical requirement — a 70 per cent grade from the city on its proposal — to be considered.
While the mayor said he was unable to confirm, as he isn’t a procurement lawyer, he says he has great faith that the recommendation made to council by staff is the right decision for taxpayers.
“I have full confidence, as does council, in the procurement process,” said Watson. “At the end of the day, I have to rely on our experts.”
With the confirmation of funding, shovels are planned to be in the ground later this year.
