Trail RCMP say a Volkswagen Beetle was driving along Seven Mile Dam Road around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday when it went off the road and into the Pend Oreille River.
The driver and front passenger were able to swim to the surface, but the two passengers sitting in the backseat, a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl, are still missing.
Police say they are both presumed dead.
Sgt. Chad Badry says the entire community is dealing with the tragedy.
“Anytime that there’s a crash involving potential fatality, it rocks small communities like Trail. It’s very tragic circumstances,” Badry said.
He adds that investigators were out in full force Monday looking for the teenagers and the car.
“They are just assessing the situation to determine if they are going to be able to go into the water to locate it,” he said.
Badry adds that it’s still too early to know if charges will be laid.
