Two schools in Calmar, Alta. were under surveillance for about three hours on Thursday after a written threat was discovered, according to emails sent to Global News from parents of students in the Black Gold Regional School Division.
Calmar Secondary school was placed in lockdown and Calmar Elementary School was in a hold and secure between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., RCMP said.
RCMP had control of the secondary school during that time, the letter said.
The action was taken after a threat was found on a bathroom wall at Calmar Secondary School by a student. The student told the school, which then called police.
RCMP said the student responsible was found and the school is handling any repercussions.
An RCMP spokesperson didn’t know what the message said.
During a lockdown, the schools’ outer doors are locked and students are kept in classrooms or designated areas. Lights may be turned off, curtains or blinds may be closed and all windows are covered.
A hold and secure is less severe, according to the school board. The external doors are locked, but students are able to continue with classes as normal inside.

Calmar is about 49 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
