The National Hockey League is investigating what might have been the use of a homophobic slur late in the second period of last night’s game in Toronto. TV Cameras picked up what sounded like a slur when Tampa Bay’s Yanni Gourde and Leafs defenceman Morgan Reilly were skating into the Toronto end. Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas says his team is prepared to fully cooperate with the league investigation. The Lightning won the game 6-2 as Tyler Johnson and Cedric Paquette each scored twice for the league leaders.
Philadelphia and Edmonton picked up wins to move to within three and five points of a playoff spot in their respective conferences. The Flyers edged Ottawa 3-2 and the Oilers won by the same 3-2 score, but in overtime versus the Rangers.
Arizona was blasted 7-1 by the Blackhawks in Chicago, Carolina shutout Colorado 3-0, Columbus lost 2-0 to the Islanders in Uniondale, and San Jose moved back into the Western Conference lead with a 3-0 win in Minnesota. The Sharks will be here to play the Jets tonight at 7 p.m. at Bell MTS Place.
The St. Paul’s Crusaders successfully defended their Manitoba High School 4A Varsity Boys Hockey Title with a 3-0 shutout of the Sturgeon Heights Huskies on Monday night at Bell MTS Iceplex.
U of M Bisons receiver Shai Ross turned in a superb performance at the CFL West Combine in Edmonton on Monday- and was rewarded by being one of only three players to earn an invite to the league’s National Combine which starts a week from Friday in Toronto. Ross, recovering from major shoulder surgery during the off-season, had the best times in the three cone (6.87) and shuttle (4.17) , finished 2/100ths of a second behind team mate Jesse Walker in the 40 yard dash by clocking in at 4.65 seconds, and also finished first in the vertical (37.5) and broad jump (11’3.00″).
Winnipeg GM Kyle Walters was in Edmonton to scout the combine and told 680 CJOB’s Bob Irving on Monday Night’s Annual Blue Bomber Winter Special that the Dakota Collegiate Grad had everyone’s attention.
“We’ve done the film on him and he’s a good football player. He came out today and boy- he ran fast and his athletic ability in the jumping events was unbelievable.”
Walters went on to say about Ross, “The word on him was a phenomenal athlete. He just may be a little bit light, a little bit undersized. But certainly a smooth route runner. A great athlete, and he showed that today.”
Bob Irving also asked the Blue Bomber GM to rate the 2019 CFL Draft and Walters said “The top 16 or 20 is as good as I can recall in a long time. Initial impression so far is it’s a real strong draft class.”
And the timing is perfect for the Blue Bombers who have three picks among the first 14 selections, including fourth and fifth overall as a result of the trade with BC last season that saw Winnipeg send their first round pick to the Lions.
Even without Lebron James, Cleveland remains a graveyard for the Raptors who lost 126-101 to the woeful Cavaliers.
And Milos Raonic has advanced to the round of 16 at the B-N-P Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
