SASKATOON – The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization’s International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) located at the University of Saskatchewan has received its final certification.
The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have now certified the facility.
VIDO-InterVac had to meet the safety and operational standards of both agencies since both animal and human bacteria and viruses will be studied.

With the certification, new vaccine research and development against existing and emerging diseases can proceed.
“InterVac greatly enhances our capacity to develop new tools, technologies and policies to help prevent diseases and save lives,” said Karen Chad, the University of Saskatchewan’s vice-president of research.
“Scientists at InterVac will work at the forefront of efforts to combat human and animal infectious disease threats, creating new knowledge and unparalleled education and training opportunities.”
InterVac is one of the world’s most advanced containment level three vaccine research centres and one of the largest of its kind.
Facilities are provided to scientists to safely conduct research in diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS.
