Saskatoon Contacts open Telus Cup with win

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Jesse Shynkaruk scored twice in the first five minutes as the Saskatoon Contacts beat the Ottawa Jr. 67’s 4-2 on Monday in the first game of the Telus Cup national midget hockey championship.

Kolten Olynek and Cameron Hebig also scored for the Contacts, who are representing the West region at the tournament. Rylan Parenteau made 31 saves.

Joey Sollazzo and Ryan Kuffner scored for the Central region’s 67’s. Simon Hofley stopped 29 shots.

Quebec’s Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montreal and the Pacific region’s Red Deer Chiefs met in the afternoon.

The host Sault Ste. Marie North Stars entertained the Atlantic region’s Valley Wildcats in the night game.

Saskatoon faces Montreal in game two on Tuesday morning.
