A New Brunswick father is living a rather unexpected dream come true.

Jacques Comeau of Dieppe, N.B., sang his heart out on stage auditioning for Quebec’s La Voix television program on Feb, 17. He was supposed to be at the show to support his 17-year-old daughter, Josiane, who was part of the program.

But the doting dad unexpectedly got his big break too.

“Being there as a father supporting my daughter I didn’t see it coming at all,” said Comeau.

Comeau, who was born and raised in New Brunswick, said he went to the competition to cheer on his daughter who was hoping to get her big break.

He had always dreamed of making it big as a singer himself.  He grew up performing and even released a solo album back in 2013 but he had put his dreams on hold for years to support his family.

“It’s like a good father, you got to work to make a living, to make sure that they get everything they need,” he said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The show producers had other plans for Comeau.  After discovering that he had been his daughter’s voice mentor since she was two-years-old, they asked him to do a blind audition for the show.

He says he had about an hour to prepare.

“I was like, what just happened?” he said.

Even though Josian did not make it past the judges herself, she knew in her heart that this was her father’s big moment.

“My dad gives everything he can to his kids and his family. He often forgets about himself in all of this and he just deserves this more than anything,” she said.

Comeau says he was in somewhat of a daze when he sang the song ‘Anymore’ and could barely hold onto the microphone because he was so nervous.  He says when two of the judges turned their chairs around, meaning he had made it through the first stage of auditions, it felt like he had been “hypnotized.”

Out of the blue, at 41-years-old, his dreams are coming true, but not without some regret that his daughter did not make the cut.

“That feeling of guilt was there because I wouldn’t be here if she wouldn’t have been though all that,” he said.

But Josiane says she could not be prouder of her dad.

“I think this was my happiest and proudest moment,” she said.

Comeau says it’s an honour to have his daughter’s support and especially to represent the Maritimes.

“Just to make people proud of where they comes from,” he said.

He is still waiting to hear from the show about when he will be called back to sing again. In the meantime, his biggest fan and daughter is by his side cheering on her dad.
