A north end Halifax restaurant will be closed for some time after fire broke out in a storage room Sunday evening.
Neighbours describe seeing smoke billowing out of the Chkn Chop, a rotisserie chicken restaurant at a small strip mall on North Street.
Deputy Fire Chief Dave Meldrum says the fire began at the rear of the building, where the kitchen and storage area is located.
He says 11 fire units were on scene and firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly.
“Because it was in a strip mall, the firefighters were very careful to make sure there was no fire spread,” he said.
“They did a great job knocking it down quickly. They opened up some walls and ceiling spaces.”

The adjoining business may have received some damage too.
“There was smoke in the adjoining pizza restaurant so there’s likely to be some smoke damage there,” he said.
According to the Chkn Shop’s website, it is closed Sundays.
In an Instagram post, the restaurant said it’s believed the fire started in a dryer in the storage room.
“We are so fortunate that no one was in the restaurant at the time of the fire and that no one was hurt. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the Halifax Fire Department and Halifax Regional Police who did amazing work to contain and extinguish the fire so quickly to prevent any further damage,” the restaurant posted.
Chkn Chop says the damage is significant and they will try to re-open “as quickly as possible” but will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
