Select Hamilton Tiger-Cats fans are invited to take a front row seat when the Canadian Football League announces the host city for the 2020 Grey Cup.

The Tiger-Cats are hosting a viewing party at Tim Hortons Field Thursday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The organization says invitations to the Club Level event were distributed through a randomized draw of interested Ticats season seat holders and Stipley neighbourhood residents.

Hamilton is up against Regina and Montreal for the right to host the league’s championship final next year; although reports suggest a two-horse race between Hamilton and Regina.

“Tiger-Cat fans everywhere, and the Tiger-Cat organization, have worked hard to convey our enthusiasm for bringing the Grey Cup to Hamilton again,” said Bob Young, Caretaker of the Tiger-Cats. “We are thrilled to be in consideration by the Canadian Football League to host the upcoming 2020 Grey Cup game and festival, and we look forward with excitement and anticipation to the league’s announcement on February 21.”

Before you assume the Tiger-Cats’ announcement of a viewing party means Hamilton is the favourite to host in 2020; the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced they would be staging three viewing parties.

The last Grey Cup to be played in Hamilton was in 1996 at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

“We want to thank all three organizations for first-class bids, any one of which would continue to take the Grey Cup game and festival to new heights,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie.

Hamilton city council’s recent decision to go behind closed doors to discuss a Grey Cup bid will be investigated by Ontario’s ombudsman to determine whether an in-camera meeting on Jan. 16 was a violation of the Ontario Municipal Act.

Councillors voted to support the Ticats’ bid to host the Grey Cup in either 2020 or 2021, but they haven’t released the potential cost to taxpayers.

The 107th Grey Cup will be held on Nov. 24 in Calgary.
