Two occupants escaped safely as fire destroyed a home near the village of Keene on Tuesday night.
Otonabee South Monaghan firefighters responded around 11:35 p.m. to reports of smoke inside a home just north of Base Line, approximately 15 kilometres south of Peterborough.
Firefighters say when they arrived on scene the home was engulfed in flames.
Two occupants – a couple in their 60s – managed to leave the burning home before firefighters arrived.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but is not considered suspicious. Officials say smoke alarms were working.
Fire officials peg the damage at $2 million.
A section of Keene Road, between Redmon Road and Base Line, was closed to traffic Tuesday morning as crews continue to battle the fire.
