Armed suspect at large after Transit police officer shot near Scott Road SkyTrain Station

Surrey RCMP are looking for a suspected gunman who shot a transit police officer yesterday afternoon at the Scott Road Skytrain station. Neetu Garcha has the latest – Jan 31, 2019

Metro Vancouver Transit Police have confirmed that an officer was shot Wednesday afternoon near the Scott Road SkyTrain station.

Police said it happened around 4 p.m., and that the officer was taken to hospital.

Transit police have confirmed that the victim is 27-year-old Const. Josh Harms, a three-year member, who is suffering serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officer in charge of the Surrey RCMP Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said police are looking for a man in his 20s with dark skin, a dark stubble goatee and a moustache. He was last seen wearing a blue hoodie and white Nike shoes with a black swoosh.

“The individual came to the immediate attention of the … officers as they attended to the Scott Road SkyTrain station. They attempted to engage him and they were immediately met with gunfire,” he said.

Police believe the suspect remains armed and at large.

Police have also established a tip line at 604-502-6284.

Witnesses reported multiple units with the Surrey RCMP and Metro Vancouver Transit police on scene, and officers with long guns drawn.

Police are on scene at Scott Road SkyTrain station after reports of shots fired at around 4 pm.

Officers with the Surrey RCMP, Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Integrated Police Dog Service were working to try and locate the suspect, police said.

There was a large police presence in the Bridgeview area of Surrey on Thursday morning.

Residents were initially asked not to leave their homes but have since been informed they can come and go as they please. They are being asked to be vigilant and report anything suspicious. Non-residents are being asked to stay away from the area as the investigation continues.

Police at checkpoints are stopping vehicles, searching trunks and speaking to pedestrians and cyclists in hopes of gathering tips that could lead them to the suspect.

Classes are expected to resume at Bridgeview Elementary School on Thursday after several students and parents were on lockdown for several hours on Wednesday.

The Scott Road SkyTrain station re-opened after being closed for seven hours.
