A city councillor was in tears Wednesday when talking about Winnipeg’s vulnerable population and the extreme weather.

Rookie Coun. Shawn Nason (Transcona) told 680 CJOB he was shook up when he saw a group of people getting kicked out of a fast-food restaurant into the cold.

Nason said he wants to see all Winnipeggers have more compassion in these conditions.

“I woke up at about 3 o’ clock this morning and looked at the temperature,” he said.

“I couldn’t imagine being outside for five minutes, let alone for the night in that cold. We’ve got to do better.”

While he acknowledges the hard work of the resources available for the homeless and vulnerable throughout the city, Nason said he’d like to see more options available to ensure that everyone who needs shelter from the -50 windchill can stay warm.

“I think there are still gaps in our community where the vulnerable are being left to fend for themselves,” he said.

“How do we address this to make sure that the vulnerable have a place to go that they feel safe at?”
