" My name is Doug McInnes. I am 43 years old and my goals for 2010 are to lose 60 lbs, quit smoking and get healthier. In late April of 2009 I was hospitalized for 8 days due to high blood pressure (235/115). When I was released from hospital I started eating healthier and tried to quit smoking but within a couple months I was right back to my old habits and smoking over a pack a day. (I started smoking when I was 13).
I had a visit with my Cardiologist in mid-December and was put on more medications and told, “YOU NEED TO CHANGE.” I got a prescription for Champix and set a quit date for Dec 26th. The first few days were tough. I needed to break the habit of having a cigarette when I wake up, or talk on the phone but I knew it was do it or face life threatening consequences. In the past I could quit for a day or two and then would think, “oh I can have a couple of puffs.” I have a lot of support from family and friends.
Trying to diet while quitting smoking has been a challenge but I have been able to lose 3 lbs this week just from making a few simple changes removing all the junk food and replacing it with healthy alternatives, as well as a committment to exercise. Just simple things such as walking to a further bus stop when I go to work.
