MONTREAL – Quebec’s ministry of education has given the green light for a new French-language elementary school to be built in Vaudreuil-Dorion. It is set to open by the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
The school will be built on the campus of Cité des Jeunes High School, where its baseball diamond now sits, said Collette Frappier, a spokesperson for the Commission scolaire des Trois Lacs.
The new school’s construction is still in preliminary planning stages, so it’s not possible to know at this point how much it will cost. Frappier said much will depend on the design choice of the school. If the board elects to go with a pre-fab design, it would be able to save on the costs of an architect. She said it will take about a year to build the school, so the ground breaking should take place in the next few months.

The new school will have three classes at each grade level, Kindergarten through Grade 6.
The high school will begin work this spring on a new synthetic soccer and football field, and Frappier said she’s not sure if the school will relocate its baseball diamond.
“It could be moved to another part of the campus,” she said. “There is a lot of land there.”
The go-ahead is a big relief to the French Board, which has been struggling to keep up with demand in the fast-growing region.
The board already opened two new schools in Vaudreuil-Dorion and St-Zotique this year, and it also needs to build a new school in St-Lazare because l’Orée-du-Bois elementary is overloaded and has had to add portable classrooms.
Frappier added there are already 100 children from St-Lazare who are bused to Vaudreuil-Dorion or to Hudson.
