Police identify man critically injured after early morning assault in downtown Toronto

Police have identified the man critically injured after an assault in the city’s downtown core early Tuesday as Toronto-based lawyer David Shellnutt.

A Toronto police spokesperson told Global News officers and paramedics were called to Queen Street West near Bathurst Street at around 12:35 a.m.

The man was involved in a fight and was knocked to the ground, the spokesperson said.

In surveillance video shared with Global News Wednesday afternoon, a man can be seen grabbing a large garbage bag from the side of the road before appearing to throw it. The man can be seen running the opposite direction as two men chased him.

All three can be seen struggling before the male victim fell on the sidewalk. A man can then be seen hitting the victim.

Police said two suspects, who are still outstanding, were last seen getting into a light blue car.

The investigation is still ongoing.
