Man charged with attempted murder after York hatchet attack

TORONTO – A man has been charged with attempted murder following an attack with a hatchet that has left one woman in very serious condition.

York police responded to reports of a violent domestic situation on Lewis Honey Dr., just east of Bayview in Aurora.

A woman was found at the scene suffering from severe head trauma. She was initially taken to a hospital in Newmarket but was transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital due to the seriousness of her condition.

Mohammed Mahdi, 46, faces a charge of attempted murder.

Mahdi appeared in the Newmarket courthouse Saturday, appearing calm in a white jumpsuit.

He used a Farsi intepreter during the court proceedings, during which time he was ordered not to communicate with nine family members.

The accused’s bail hearing has been moved to Tuesday to allow the Crown to gather more evidence.
