Google Maps goes inside the House of Commons

TORONTO – Google is taking its Street View trolley off the streets and inside one of Canada’s most important historic landmarks Tuesday.

The Internet giant has been granted special access to the Parliament buildings, including the House of Commons, the Red Chamber of the Senate, the Library of Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office.

“It’s exciting to provide another way for Canadians to be able to view and experience their Parliament buildings,” said the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons in a press release.

“This is truly an opportunity for Canadians to bring the House of Commons into their homes.”

The Speakers of both the Commons and the Senate have given special permission for the cart to record the architecture and art of the buildings.

Eventually, Google users will be able to explore the Hall of Honour, see the Memorial Chamber and even take the elevator to the top of the peace tower, without having to step foot in Ottawa.

Google will even map the hallway that is home to the portraits of Canada’s former Prime Ministers.

Google’s Street View trolley, a 360 degree camera mounted on a small push-cart, is used to map delicate areas such as museums and galleries.

The trolley is equipped with a panoramic camera, motion sensors used to track the unit’s position, a hard drive and an onboard computer system to operate the system.

Google says the Parliament Hill imagery will be available on Google Maps “in the coming months.”
