CORRECTION: The original version of this story incorrectly reported the Royal Alberta Museum does not have accessible parking. In fact, the museum has three accessible parking spots near the main doors. The story has been updated to reflect that.
The Royal Alberta Museum is setting the record straight after concerns were raised about accessible parking at the new downtown facility.
Over the weekend, advocates criticized the lack of accessible parking on the museum site.
The museum says there are three parking spots for visitors with disabilities located near the bus loop just outside the main doors on the west side of the building.
There is direct access to the LRT pedway, and public elevators are available to allow access to public transportation. There are also drop-off locations at both entrances and a DATS stop outside the main entrance.
“We believe the new Royal Alberta Museum belongs to all of us and every Albertan should be able to access their new provincial museum,” says a post on the RAM’s Facebook page. “That is why we considered the availability of parking for people with disabilities in our planning.”
The museum won an award from Spinal Cord Injury Alberta in March for the facility’s design, which the association found “exceeded building codes in terms of wheelchair accessibility.”
The museum’s new location opens on Oct. 3.
