Suspected border runner captured after shots fired; manhunt underway for second man

Abbotsford Police confirm they are helping U.S. border officers look for two men who ran across the border.

Mike Milne with U.S. Customs & Border Protection says around 9:10 a.m. border patrol officers spotted two men wearing cammo gear and backpacks in the Columbia Valley about 10 kilometers west of Sumas.

When officers tried to make contact, the suspects fled and one fired shots.

No one was hurt and he says customs officers did not return fire.

One suspect was arrested and officials on both sides of the border are looking for the second suspect.

An area near Vye Road and Marion Road is blocked off, near the boundary. The nearby mountainside is home to a trail popular with drug mules, who run drugs and money across the U.S.-Canada border.

RCMP Air One chopper along with two American helicopters are involved in the search. Officers with dogs are searching the bush on the moutainside.

Abbotsford residents have been asked to avoid ArnoldRoadCommunityChurch at this time as they have set up a command post.

Upper Sumas elementary school was locked down over recces and the lunch hour, but has since re-opened. Border officials and police are searching both sides of the border.

Police have set-up vehicle checkpoints in the area. There’s no word on the identity or nationality of the captured man.
