Inmate dies at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, cause of death unclear

A 29-year-old inmate at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility who was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday has died.

In a news release Tuesday morning, the province’s justice department said the inmate was found unresponsive at about 9:30 p.m.

He was sent to the Dartmouth General Hospital, and was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon.

“This man’s family and loved ones have been in my thoughts since I received word of the incident,” said Minister of Justice Mark Furey in a statement.

“I was saddened to hear of the tragic outcome and can assure you that the department will work with police and others as the investigation continues.”

Furey said he can’t speak to the specific circumstances surrounding the matter, but added that he is not aware of any reports of a violent incident.

“[It is] very early into both the police and the internal investigation,” Furey stated.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the matter.
