A standoff between police and a distraught man in Port Moody was resolved peacefully on Friday morning.

Police said a distraught man phoned them from a home on Aspenwood Drive around 5:50 a.m., suggesting that he had a weapon.

Because of the possibly weapon, the Port Moody Police Department (PMPD) called in the RCMP’s Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team (ERT), leading to a standoff that lasted about five hours, according to PMPD Sgt. Travis Carrol.

“Unfortunately when there’s concerns of a weapon being involved we have to take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of everyone involved, that’s why the situation turned out the way it did,” he said.

Carrol said the public was not at risk, and no one else was home at the time.

The man was taken into custody around 11 a.m. and taken to hospital.
