The Wolfe Island Music festival officially started on Friday, which means a weekend packed with music, but also long lines for the ferry.
According to the Wolfe Island Ferry Twitter account, the high amount of traffic using the ferry to get to the festival on Friday made the boat go off schedule.
The high traffic also prompted Wolfe Island Ferry management to advise people to leave their cars at home, take the ferry on foot or on a bike and hop on their new shuttle service, which will take them to the festivities.
It’s the 20th year for the now two-day event, but the festival wasn’t always as large as it is today.
When it began in the ’90s, the festival started as a party on the Wolfe Island dock with just a few musicians playing together on a hay wagon, according to the Wolfe Island website.
Cindy Gibson has co-organized and hosted the event for a number of years and says the festival has featured bands that went on to major success.
“July Talk is one, also the band Alvvays. They did an afternoon set a couple years ago, and a lot of people said, ‘Cindy I don’t know this band,’ and they went on to have one of Rolling Stones’ top albums of that year.”
This year, one of the bigger names at the festival will be alternative rock band Yukon Blonde, who will be headlining Saturday night.
A number of Kingston acts will also take the stage, such as Oakridge Avenue and Deux Trois. All in all, there will be 20 bands performing this weekend, and one extra special performance.
“I’m told a special Gord Downie tribute will be done on Saturday,” Gibson said.
