People seeking relief from the heat are being asked to think twice before taking a dip in the South Saskatchewan River.
Saskatoon Fire Department assistant chief Wayne Rodger said the river is just too unpredictable.
“Our experts, our surface water technicians, our divers are telling us how dangerous this body of water can be,” Rodger said.
“It’s moving, it’s flowing, the bottom of the river is forever changing. It’s never the same and those conditions for a swimmer can be quite dangerous.”
Underwater teams have already recovered several bodies from the river this year.
Saskatoon bylaws forbid swimming in the South Saskatchewan River, and dogs are supposed to be on leashes near the river.
Those looking to beat the heat can take advantage of one of the city’s 29 paddling pools, 20 spray pads, and four outdoor pools.
