Train derailment, diesel leak at Edmonton CN yard

Multiple rail cars derailed at the CN Walker Yard in Edmonton early Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue said the call came in from CN just before 3 a.m.

CN said crews found five cars and two locomotives derailed when they arrived at the yard.

About 2,000 litres of diesel has leaked.

“Our environmental teams responded and the spill has been contained to the immediate area in the yard,” CN spokesperson Kate Fenske said. “There were no leaks or spills from the cars involved.”

Edmonton police blocked off northbound lanes on 97 Street blocked off for about an hour as hazmat and CN crews searched for spills and leaks.

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours.

At 7:30 a.m., Fenske said crews were “proceeding with re-railing of the cars.”

She said there was no impact to the public and an investigation was underway into the cause of the derailment.
