SASKATOON – Students at public schools in Saskatoon will be spending a little more time in the classroom starting with the next school year.
The Saskatoon board of education passed its 2013-14 school calendar last night which includes shortening the number of instructional days from 197 to 195 and increasing an additional 15 minutes to the school day.
There will be a two-week break at Christmas and a 10-day spring break, which includes Easter.
A five-day break will also take place in February around the Family Day holiday.
The calendar was decided on after consultation with parents, students and staff.
“We heard that lengthening the school day and limiting changes to vacations was the most appropriate solution,” said Ray Morrison, board chair.
“We believe this calendar will work for our families and staff members while maintaining our focus on student learning.”
The calendar still needs to be approved by the Ministry of Education.
