Firefighters say another small fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. behind the building that housed the Topanga Cafe on W 4th Avenue at Bayswater Street.

Crews were able to knock the flames down in about an hour.

The fire is being considered suspicious.

“The evidence is pointing to a set fire,” said Vancouver Fire Rescue Capt. Johnathan Gormick.

“We were on scene for 14 hours cooling that pile, and we had a rainy wet weekend. The chances of a rekindle happening a week later are almost non-existent.”

The initial fire, which broke out early in the morning of July 5, gutted the century-old building, including the restaurant and a foot reflexology business.

It also destroyed the apartment block on the second floor, forcing the tenants of two units from their homes.

Investigators believe the original fire was an accident, likely caused by a cigarette.
