Saskatoon police are handling a body found after a house fire as a suspicious death.
The body of an adult was found when firefighters searched the home at 229 Ave. F North after responding to a fire call.
The Saskatoon Fire Department is working with arson investigators and major crime detectives in the suspicious death investigation.
“With all fire deaths, we proceed with the assumption of some level of suspicion until it can be disproved,” acting fire chief Anthony Tataryn said.
“Our fire investigators work closely with the police arson investigators and they’re the ones who determine who needs to be involved and at what point.”
The fire was called in just after 2:30 a.m. Friday.
Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the rear of the home. Additional crews were called in and the fire was brought under control in 12 minutes.
“The damage was fairly extensive,” Tataryn said.
“Based on the interior and the charring in the structure, the fire was likely burning in a closed environment for a length of time prior to us getting the call – but that will be determined by the investigators.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
